NEWMAN - A community farmer’s market will debut Friday evening in Newman’s downtown plaza.
Organized by the city in conjunction with the Newman Chamber of Commerce, the farmer’s market will feature fresh produce while also serving up a variety of food, entertainment and activities.
Alicia Mendoza, the city’s community liaison, said 20 booths have been lined up for the first night.
That includes three produce vendors, Mendoza noted, a number which she expects to increase as additional fruits and vegetables come into season.
The city has committed to offering the market each Friday evening through the month of June, Mendoza noted, and if the event is successful it may be continued into July.
Newman has not had a farmer’s market in several years.
Mendoza said organizers are hoping to create a family-friendly atmosphere which encourages visitors to make a full evening of it in downtown Newman.
Visitors can peruse the fresh produce offered for sale, grab a bite from a vendor in the plaza or at a downtown restaurant, and enjoy the entertainment and activities offered each Friday evening, she told Mattos Newspapers.
“The feedback we have been getting from vendors and in the community has been amazing,” Mendoza shared. “We created the space for the event, and others are sharing it and posting it and getting the word out. It looks like it is going to be a good turnout.”
The emphasis is on local vendors, she noted.
On opening night, she said by way of example, Pizza Plus and Santi’s will each be selling their food in the plaza....an extension of their downtown restaurants.
Other vendors will be peddling items ranging from shave ice and baked goods to soaps and candles.
“We will have local for the most part. That is the goal of the chamber and the city, to give local vendors the opportunity,” Mendoza commented. “We have so much to offer here....why not take the opportunity to showcase that?”
Each Friday night will feature its own theme.
This week those attending (children and adults alike) are invited to dress the part of their favorite superhero. A costume contest will be held at 6 p.m.
Children’s activities this week include rock painting.
The local Cause for Paws organization will be among those in attendance, Mendoza said, offering market-goers an opportunity to adopt a pet.
The market is also an opportunity to promote Newman’s strong sense of community, she remarked, bringing together residents and visitors from surrounding towns to share the evening in a social setting.
“I hope that we are building the foundation for years to come,” Mendoza commented.
Future theme nights include Star Wars on June 14, Hawaiian on June 21 and carnival on June 28.
The market will run from 4-8 p.m. each Friday night.
Vendor registration is still being accepted, Mendoza said, but advance notice is required.
