NEWMAN - The Newman FDES will host its annual festa this weekend.
The celebration of faith and Portuguese heritage will include processions, entertainment, traditional Portuguese foods, dances and much more.
The festa started with the praying of the rosary Wednesday evening. Rosaries continue each evening at 7 p.m. through Friday.
A full weekend of activities begins with the bodo de leite, or parade of animals, at 11 a.m. Saturday. Musicians will accompany the procession, which will make its way from the FDES Hall through downtown Newman and back to the hall, where a lunch of beef stew will be served.
An auction bazaar and performances by folklore dancers will follow the lunch.
The Saturday evening events start with praying of the rosary at 7:30 p.m. in the chapel of the hall, followed by cantoria singers and a dance to the music of Arlindo Andrade. Queens and officers will be presented at the dance.
The procession of visiting queens to and from mass forms at 10 a.m. Sunday at the hall. Mass will be recited at 11 a.m. at St. Joachim’s Catholic Church. Father Pedro Cabral will celebrate the mass. He will be accompanied by the Portuguese Choir of the Shrine of Our Lady of Miracles.
Sopas will be served at the hall following the return of the procession.
An auction of gifts and bazaar will be held during the afternoon.
After the praying of the rosary in the chapel at 7 p.m., sopas will again be served.
A dance will follow, with music provided by Manuel Jacinto.
Haley Correia, daughter of Joao and Valerie Correia, is the 2019-20 Newman FDES senior queen. Her sidemaids are Brianna Correia, also the daughter of Joao and Valerie Correia, and Rosa Silva, daughter of Paulo and Helena Silva.
Delilah Perreira, the daughter of Ashley Silveira and David Sanchez, is the 2019-20 FDES junior queen. Her sidemaids are Kayla Gomes, daughter of Luis and Amanda Gomes, and Sienna Veiga, daughter of Daniela Vega.
