NEWMAN - A 2-year-old Newman boy was attacked and killed by a family dog last Thursday afternoon, June 27.

The name of the child was not released.

Authorities said the child was attacked in the back yard of the family home in the 1900 block of Pine Street, near Inyo Avenue.

Police and emergency medical personnel were dispatched to the scene shortly after 2 p.m.

The child was transported by ground ambulance to Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock, where he was pronounced dead.

Newman Police Lt. Brett Short said the child had suffered multiple bite wounds in the attack.

Sgt. Jason Clayton, spokesperson for the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department, said the dog was a mastiff/pit bull mix.

The dog was quarantined by Newman Animal Services. Short said Monday the dog will be euthanized.

The Stanislaus County Crimes Against Persons Team and coroner’s office were activated to assist the Newman Police Department with the death investigation.

No additional information was released regarding the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
