Dog bite scene

Newman police said a young child approximately 2 years of age who was attacked by a family dog earlier this afternoon his died.

Newman Police Lt. Brett Short told Mattos Newspapers that the child was pronounced dead at Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock.

Short said the child suffered multiple bite wounds when attacked in the rear yard of a residence in the 1900 block of Pine Street.

Short described the dog involved as a large mixed breed. The dog has been impounded by police, Short said.

Short said a team from the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department has been called in to conduct the investigation.

The circumstances surrounding the attack were not immediately known, and no additional information was available.
