A Newman man sustained major injuries when his vehicle crashed into a pole on Monday, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The solo vehicle collision happened around 1 p.m. Aug. 1 in the area of Kelley and River roads, near Stevinson.

The 65-year-old man was driving a 2001 Mercury Sable north on Kelley Road, just north of River Road, when for an unknown reason he suddenly lost control of the vehicle and it went off the road and struck a power pole.

The impact was primarily on the passenger side of the vehicle, resulting in major damage and serious injuries for the driver, including a head injury, according to the CHP.

The CHP said speed and weather conditions may have played a factor in the crash, because it did rain on Monday. Alcohol and drugs were not suspected in the collision.
