A collision between a tractor and a pickup truck on Eastin Road near Crows Landing resulted in the death of a Newman man, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The deceased was identified as Alberto Toscano, 60, of Newman.
The collision happened around 5:30 a.m. Friday.
Toscano was driving a John Deere tractor with a sprayer attached on Eastin Road, south of Highway 33, when he was rear-ended by a Chevrolet pickup, driven by Cesar Bravo, 24.
The impact sent the tractor off the west side of Eastin Road, where it overturned, according to the CHP. The trailer with the sprayer collided and wrapped around a utility pole.
The Chevrolet pickup veered off to the east side of the road and came to a stop.
Toscano was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected off the tractor, the CHP stated. A Stanislaus County Sheriff’s deputy was the first to arrive at the scene and performed CPR, but Toscano had sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Bravo had minor injuries from the crash, but declined medical treatment, the CHP reported.
Bravo told the investigating CHP officers that the sun had been in his eyes and that he did not see the tractor in front of him. The CHP is investigating if speed was a factor in the collision.
Drugs and alcohol are not considered to be factors in the crash.
The Newman Fire Department assisted at the scene and provided traffic control for a time.
The investigation is ongoing.
