Two people were transported to area hospitals for treatment of injuries suffered in a single-vehicle accident Monday afternoon, Sept. 21, on Highway 33 north of Lundy Road, the California Highway Patrol reported. The CHP said Gregorio Rodriguez, 54, of Newman was driving a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer southbound on Highway 33 when the vehicle drifted off the roadway and onto the shoulder. The CHP said the driver attempted to re-enter the highway, but the vehicle went out of control and overturned an unknown number of times before coming to rest off the roadway. According to the CHP, Rodriguez was transported by air to Memorial Medical Center with a hand injury and chest pain, and a passenger, Carolina Lopez, 60, of Newman, was taken by ground ambulance to Doctors Medical Center with a hand injury and complaint of pain to her neck and chest. The accident occurred shortly before 3 p.m. The CHP said both parties were wearing seat belts, and that drugs and/or alcohol do not appear to have been a factor in the accident.
