A 6-year-old boy was flown to Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera with complaint of pain following a two-vehicle accident Wednesday, Feb. 19 at Sullivan and Whitworth roads, according to the California Highway Patrol. The CHP said the child was one of three passengers in a 2013 Ford Explorer driven by Maria Herrera Vargas, 32, of Gustine. The CHP said Vargas was driving northbound on Whitworth Road and had stopped at Sullivan, but then proceeded into the intersection and was struck broadside by an eastbound Kenworth tractor/trailer driven by Julio Carabeo-Amores, 51, of Las Vegas. Neither driver or the two other passengers in the Explorer, children ages 5 and 11, were injured in the crash, according to the CHP. Officials reported that everybody involved was wearing seat belts. The accident happened shortly after 11:30 a.m.
