Assault, robbery case

Gustine police said a 16-year-old bicyclist sustained minor injuries Friday afternoon, Sept. 4, when he was reportedly struck by a vehicle whose driver then placed the bicycle in the sedan and left the scene.

Gustine Police Lt. Sam Joseph said the juvenile told authorities he was riding in the parking lot of the Shrine of Our Lady of Miracles when he was approached by the suspect, who told the victim that the bicycle was his and had been stolen a year earlier in Los Banos.

Joseph said the victim told the suspect that his father had purchased the bike for him, and attempted to ride to his home but the suspect followed. Joseph said the juvenile attempted to elude the suspect by taking a dirt road behind Borrelli Ranch, but when he emerged in the area of Via Basilicata and Via Palermo he was struck by the suspect’s vehicle, throwing the teen over the handlebars. Joseph said the suspect reportedly threw the bicycle into the sedan he was driving and drove away.

The teen was treated at the scene for scrapes and scratches, Joseph reported.

He said a suspect has been identified and a warrant has been issued in the case, which Joseph said is being investigated as an assault with a deadly weapon and robbery.
