A mail carrier was seriously injured when the postal vehicle she was driving collided with a GMC making a left turn off of Highway 33.

The collision happened around 1:50 p.m. Sunday on Highway 33 and Husman Road, north of Santa Nella, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Veronica Hurtado, 23, of Modesto was driving the U.S. Postal truck northbound on the highway, just south of Husman Road.

A GMC driven by Narbeh Nathan, 36, of San Francisco was headed southbound on the highway. According to the CHP report, Nathan was slowing down to about 45 miles per hour to make a left turn onto Husman.

Nathan misjudged how close the mail truck was and turned left directly in front of it, according to the CHP.

The front of the mail truck struck the right side of the GMC. The force of the impact sent the mail truck airborne and it came crashing down on its right side.

Hurtado was rushed to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto with major injuries.

Nathan had minor injuries and was not transported for medical treatment. His passenger, Gohar Azadkhanian, 72, of San Francisco sustained moderate injuries and was transported by ambulance to Memorial Medical Center.

The CHP does not believe alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.

The investigation is ongoing.
