Larry Elmer Avila of Newman passed away Thursday, Feb. 6, at his residence.
He was 88.
Mr. Avila was born in Hopeton, Calif.
He lived in Newman for 45 years. He was a high school math and science teacher for 19 years and a football, basketball, softball and baseball coach.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
Mr. Avila was a parishioner at St. Joachim’s Catholic Church, Newman.
He is survived by his wife, Chris Avila of Newman; a daughter, Kathy Avila of Newman and son-in-law Manuel Avelar of Newman.
He was preceded in death by his son, Arthur Avila.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 17, at St. Joachim’s Catholic Church, followed by a rosary and mass of Christian burial.
Interment will follow in Hills Ferry Cemetery.
