Dorothy Lee Vargas, 85, of Newman passed away peacefully at her residence Saturday, July 27, surrounded by family.
Ms. Vargas was born in Modesto to Joe and Isabelle Vargas. She was a lifelong resident of Newman who lived on the family farm for over 70 years. She was the family matriarch who carried out and kept up all the family traditions and holidays.
Ms. Vargas was a faithful participant and parishioner at St. Joachim’s Catholic Church in Newman and was a member of the Altar Society.
She lived her life with a great devotion to family and friends, and had a deep love of animals. She was a loyal supporter of all charities in regard to animal care and preservation.
She worked for and retired from Pacific Bell as a phone operator for over 35 years.
Ms. Vargas is survived by a sister, Joyce Ananos of Pleasant Hill, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Ms. Vargas was preceded in death by three brothers, Richard Vargas, Daniel Vargas and Thomas Vargas; and a sister, Jeanette Pires.
Visitation will be from 6-7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, at Hillview Funeral Chapel, Newman, with a rosary to follow. A mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, at St. Joachim’s Catholic Church, Newman.
Interment will follow in Hills Ferry Cemetery.
