Elwood Alfred Schut of Patterson passed away Oct. 2 at 84 years of age.
A native of Ripon, Mr. Schut was a long-time resident of Patterson.
Mr. Schut was a 1953 graduate of Patterson High, where he lettered in four different sports each year.
He went on to play football at Modesto Junior College and Fresno State.
He served in the U.S. Army and was proud to represent them on the football field as well.
He became an insurance agent in 1960 and opened his own business. He continued to work until his death.
Mr. Schut was a member of the Patterson Rotary Club and the Patterson Masonic Lodge. He earned recognition with both organizations.
He was active in numerous community organizations.
Mr. Schut served on the Patterson Volunteer Fire Department for 25 years, was a member and former president of the Apricot Fiesta, and was past president of the Patterson Chamber of Commerce. He was active in the Patterson Township Historical Society and PRIDE, a community-based scholarship organization.
Mr. Schut served on numerous commissions and committees for a variety of agencies. He was involved in the Patterson Economic Strategic Committee.
Mr. Schut enjoyed farming, weekend construction projects, traveling the world and enjoying coffee with friends.
He is survived by his sons, Evan Schut (Katheryn) and Collin Schut (Lisa); and his brothers, Alan Schut and Mike Schut. He was grandfather to Sadie, Ethan, Ewan, Cody and Ryan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Aneta Schut; a sister, Betty Howell; and his wife of 52 years, Joland Schut.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, at Hillview Funeral Chapel, Patterson.
Inurnment will be private.
