Richard Manuel Souza, 65, of Newman passed away Thursday, Dec. 12, 2019, following a brief illness.
He was the second child of a family of six children, born to Frank P. Souza and Shirley Knight Souza on June 22, 1954.
He loved the outdoors and spent most of his time camping, fishing, hunting and just goofing around with his brothers
Richard had a passion for reading anything and everything, including history and the annual Farmer’s Almanac.
He also enjoyed wood carving.
Richard had various jobs in his lifetime, which included motorcycle repair, plumbing and years of employment at Monterey Pet Hospital. That is where he learned to love and care for pets, especially his dogs.
He attended Newman schools and was in the Orestimba High Class of 1972, but left before graduation and moved to Pacific Grove, where he attended and finished high school.
He loved the ocean and going out on his small boat in the early morning hours to fish.
He will be remembered for his impromptu sense of humor, his mechanical knowledge and his love of nature.
Richard was preceded in death by his grandparents, Manuel M. and Mary Souza of Pacific Grove and Wendell Knight and Stella Cox Green of Newman; his father, Frank P. Souza of Pacific Grove, and his mother, Shirley Medeiros of Newman.
He is survived by a daughter, Amy DeGeorge and her family of Antelope; four brothers, Steve Souza (Grace) of Pacific Grove, Mark Souza (Esther) of Newman, Frank Souza (Tina) of Del Rey Oaks and Robert Souza of Turlock; a sister, Claire Souza of Newman; two aunts and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
The Souza family will celebrate his life with a private service at a later date, in accordance with his wishes.
