To the editor:

It is with deep disappointment that I announce I will not be a candidate for the District 5 Stanislaus County Supervisor seat in the upcoming 2020 election.

I have always been proud of my record in office. I show up, I vote and I represent my constituents to the best of my abilities.

I have always believed in the “better safe than sorry” approach to government and politics. Before this campaign year began in earnest, I wanted to make certain that I had left no stone left unturned and ensured that nothing would interfere with my ability to fully represent the interests of Stanislaus County and the residents of District 5.

Unfortunately, in discussions with my attorney and others, I have determined that my business circumstances would potentially interfere with my ability to fully represent my constituents.

That would not be fair to the people of the Fifth District or the county as a whole. Thus, I will not be seeking election to county office at this time.

I will continue to be active and engaged in efforts to support the Valley and Stanislaus County. I remain hopeful that circumstances will allow me to once again represent the people of Stanislaus County in elected office in the future.

I offer my profound thanks and gratitude to the many people who encouraged my candidacy and endorsed my effort.

Anthony Cannella
