To the editor:

In the space of five hours I called the Newman Police Department twice to report excessive, intrusive loud music and drunken laughter. The individuals were clearly under the influence and exceeding acceptable measures of merriment. The police did nothing. In hopes of escaping the noise I took my dogs for a walk and encountered another large party. Participants were drinking openly and under the influence. I counted 23 cars and about 60 people.

This should be of interest to elected leaders who claim disdain for drunken drivers. Shouldn’t we be concerned and elected leaders take action? Shouldn’t there be an effort at preventing reckless drunkenness and its consequences?

Don’t cops know noise ordinances have nothing to do with volume, duration or complaints, but intrusion into people’s lives?
