To the editor:

It is laughable that a professional politician like Jeff Denham, who is running for re-election in November, writes an opinion piece (Modesto Bee, June 28) about the need to reach across the aisle in getting the votes necessary to pass the immigration reform bill. 

To the editor:

I remember celebrating the Fourth of July in times past, proud of my country’s stature in the world, proud of its legacy as a shining light to the down-trodden and huddled masses, proud of its accomplishments and its faithful support and nurturing of its friends and allies around the world. Oh, sure, we’d stumbled and fallen along the way, and our record is not without blemish but, overall, we led by example.
