To the editor:

The Newman-Crows Landing Unified School District Nutrition Services Department would like to thank everyone for their support for the NCLUSD Health and Wellness Showcase. We had about 1,000 people attend throughout the event.

We are proud to offer this opportunity to our students to explore health-based community resources. Good health is paramount to school success, and we hope we provided some opportunities for students to do hands-on learning. We have many to thank for making this a successful, student-centered event.

Thank you first of all to the teachers who brought their students to participate as a field trip, and the parents and community members who brought their families after school. I would like to thank the site principals and learning directors for their support and assistance in helping with logistics to make this all possible. I would like to thank the superintendent, Randy Fillpot, for his support and encouragement throughout the planning process. Thank you to Jaime Rico’s floriculture class for assembling the balloon arch, and Jennifer Villalobos’ life skills class for their assistance in setting up the venue. Thank you to all of our Orestimba student volunteers who worked the event to make sure things went smoothly.

Raley’s-Nob Hill Foods provided $5,000 toward the event through their Extra Credit grant program. This provided the funding for the farmer’s market produce and the materials needed for the students to participate in the event. Each student left with produce and a pumpkin to take home and share with his or her family. Many students took items they’d never seen before but were curious to try.

A very special thanks to our local sponsors, Stewart & Jasper and Fantozzi Farms This would not have been possible without their generous donations of products. Thanks to Joe’s Landscape for bringing winter vegetables and teaching students how to plant and care for them. Thank you to Dean Harris and Maria Vasquez of Mattos Newspapers for their promotion of our event to the community.

Thank you to our vendors who came out to bring samples and information on community resources, including representatives from Yang’s 5th Taste, Schwan’s, Berkeley Farms, Jessica’s House, Newman Partnership, Livingston Community Health, Golden Valley Health Centers, the West Side Health Care Task Force, Newman Fire Department, West Side Ambulance, Center for Human Services, Turlock Mosquito Abatement District, the City of Newman, and the Dairy Council of California.

I would sincerely like to thank my food service leadership team of Suzan Johnson, Laura Gordon, Adriana Samano, Donna Krogh, Jennifer Samano and  Sandy Shinnick, and their staffs for their support of the students. A special thank you to Alex Pineda and Kris Zamora for their hard work and tremendous efforts to coordinate all the moving pieces to the day.

We are working on setting up the date for next year’s event and hope to see the community again at the event.
