Gustine is carrying high hopes into the new boys' soccer season, fielding a team loaded with both experience and determination to bounce back after a rough 2020-2021 season going 1-9 overall and 0-7 in the Southern Athletic League.
The Reds look forward to this season with designs on being in the mix for a playoff berth.
The 21-man roster, with a mixture of juniors and seniors, will be coached by Octavio Martinez, who is now in his 13th season as the head coach.
“My team for the most part will be juniors and seniors and we should have a very mature team with experience, knowledge, and chemistry that should help throughout the season,” said Martinez.
Martinez said to improve from their tough losses from last season they need to put everything together as team, while also playing as one and they must improve their communication skills on the field.
“I told my team if we put it together, we will make it to playoffs.”
As practices have been underway for the Reds they have been working on having a solid defensive team each practice, along with conditioning, and working through the fundamentals..
“We are a team who can play great soccer but at the same time we can play sloppy," Martinez said. "The main goal is to play as a team and evolve as the season rolls out. Our preseason will be very challenging but we should be better once league starts.”
The Reds will kick off their preseason schedule against the Patterson Tigers from the Central California Conference, on Friday at home. Varsity game time will begin at 5:30 p.m.
