Gustine opened its 2020 season on a winning note Friday.
The Reds backed a combined two-hitter from Logan Luker and Giovanni Quezada with plenty of offense, coming away with an 8-2 win over host Stone Ridge Christian.
Gustine put together four two-run innings while winning the opener.
The West Siders got on the board in the first, when Devin Bettencourt led off with a base hit and came around to score and Gannon Silva walked and scored on a base hit by Gabriel Silveira.
The Reds made it 4-0 in the third. Nathan Nunes doubled and scored on an error, and Thomas Gomes reached base via a walk and eventually scored on a grounder.
Stone Ridge Christian cut the deficit in half with two runs in the bottom of the third, but Gustine answered in the fourth. Jonathan Martin and Bettencourt each walked and scored in that frame.
Gustine finished the scoring with two more runs in the sixth. Bettencourt laced a two-out double and scored on a Nunes’ sacrifice fly. Quezada singled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Gomes.
Bettencourt led the Reds with a three-for-three day at the plate. Quezada, Nunes, Silva, Silviera and Martin each had one hit.
Logan Luker got the start for the Reds and threw four innings. He allowed two hits and walked three while striking out six. Quezada closed out the game, yielding no hits and two walks while fanning six.
Patterson 18, GHS 5
Visiting Patterson took advantage of walks (12) and errors (eight) in the Reds’ home opener Saturday.
Gustine matched the Tigers in the first, when each team scored twice, but Patterson took the lead for good with a four-run second and then put the finishing touches on the win with 11 runs in the sixth.
Nunes had three of Gustine’s eight hits on the afternoon. Quezada collected two hits, and Bettencourt, Silva and Gomes hit safely for the Reds.
