Gustine Youth Football Redskins summer drills are under way, with four divisions ranging from junior novice to varsity gearing up and preparing for the season that is right around the corner.

GYBS President and varsity head coach Dan Rocha, along with the coaches in other divisions, have been guiding their teams in conditioning drills in preparation to take the practice field in pads this Monday. Rocha said he expects contact drills to begin late this week.

This year the program faces a challenge with low numbers of players at each level. There is a possibility that the junior novice and novice teams may be combined for that reason, Rocha stated.

“We are in bit of struggle on numbers this year,” said Rocha, “ but we know we’ll be able to figure this out as time goes on.”

This year for the program a few changes have come, such as new uniforms which players are looking forward to wearing, and the addition of some new board members.

The early focus for the youth Redskins has been on conditioning.

“We are working on the basic fundamentals with these young kids,” Rocha told Mattos Newspapers. “ We want to train these kids in balance, working on their footwork, and drills that are (designed) for their position.”

He mentioned that through the program he wants to prepare every individual player for the next level, whether advancing up the ranks in the youth football structure or exiting the GYF program to play in high school the following year.

Coach Rocha and staff emphasized that junior novice and novice players are needed. Payment plans and sponsorships are available.Contact Elizabeth Williams, 769-8358, for more information.
