J.D. Horton carries the football for the frosh-soph Warriors against Hughson Friday.

Orestimba suffered its first loss of the young frosh-soph season at the hands of Hughson Friday, dropping a 14-0 decision in a defensive battle.

A combination of a solid Hughson defense and three turnovers proved too much for the JV Warriors to overcome.

After the two teams exchanged solid opening drives without putting points on the board, the game settled into a defensive mode and stayed that way.

Hughson broke the ice late in the half to take a 7-0 lead into intermission.

The Huskies struck on a long scoring pass with less than five minutes left in the game to make it 14-0 and seal the victory.

Orestimba’s defense was a highlight, coach Mario Martins said, coming up with a number of big stops.

The Warrior offense found some success on the ground but struggled to get anything going through the air, he added.

“Hughson’s defense had great speed, and we didn’t help ourselves by turning the ball over at the wrong times and giving Hughson better field position than we had all night long,” Martins commented. “I was proud of how our kids competed all night long. We might have just played the fastest team we will face all year, and we went toe to toe with them.”

Kai Brazil led the Orestimba defense with seven tackles.

Jacob Linares and Julian Perez each were involved in five tackles, and Joseph Flores had four tackles on the night.

Orestimba takes a 1-1 record into its pre-league finale Friday at Golden Sierra.
