It was a great game put on by the defenses of the Reds and Ripon Christian Knights JV squads throughout three straight quarters with not a single score lighting up the score board. But the Knights (7-1 overall; 3-1 SAL) were able to come away a big fourth quarter, tallying five scoring touchdowns compared to the Reds’ two touchdowns.

Gustine’s overall record fell to 2-5, while in the Southern League they fell to 1-4.

It was a back and forth battle to see who would score first in this match up and both squads were able to keep the opposing team out of the endzone in the first half.

“At the end of the first half it felt good. The team was showing a different persona compared to other games and we were right in there with them,” said head JV coach Ronnie LaBry. “Our defense has definitely improved, and as for our offense the passing game is coming around great.”

In the third quarter they were scoreless once again with both defenses coming up with big stops.

As the fourth quarter came around so did the scoring and the Knights offense scored five times in contrast to the Reds scoring two.

The Reds scored off an 82-yard kick return by freshmen Mike Saaranzin. Their second score came from Saaranzin once again, who scored on a 15-yard passing touchdown. But these two scores wasn’t enough to keep up with the Knights, as they came away with the 35-13 win over the Reds.

“In that final quarter they really out matched us in every aspect of that game, and it was just getting harder and harder for us to come back,” said LaBry. “But looking back I know they didn’t expect us to come out like that and have a great game until the fourth quarter. We just got to figure out to finish games and not hang our head when we get into bad situations.”

For the Reds next match up it will be against the league leaders, the Orestimba Warriors (8-2 overall; 6-0 SAL), who are looking to come away with the win and claim the 2021 League Championship. This will be the Reds and Warriors 75th anniversary rivalry game. The match up will begin at 5 p.m.

“This will be another tough team we will face this season; they will out match us in most of the categories, but overall what we need to do is not give them any free points, eliminate mistakes and overall do our part to keep up with this Orestimba team.”
