Lady Warrior Jade Robinson defends for Orestimba in varsity Los Banos tournament play against Dos Palos.

Orestimba came away with championship honors last weekend in the second annual Valerie Lugo Invitational girls basketball tournament at Los Banos High.

Solid defense helped pave the way for the Lady Warriors, who allowed no more than 32 points in any of their three tournament games and won each by a double digit margin.

Jade Robinson was named the tournament’s most valuable player. Orestimba teammate Reagan Marroquin was also named to the all-tournament team.

“We’re coming together as a team and are focused on making specific improvements each game. The girls have put in a lot of work and they are continuing to work,” commented head coach Scott Felber. “It really showed in this tournament. Each game was better than the game before.”

Orestimba played outstanding team defense, forced numerous turnovers and was strong on the boards throughout the tournament, he added.

Orestimba wrapped up the title with a 51-32 win over Madera in the championship game Saturday.

The Lady Warriors dominated the middle quarters in the win. A 12-3 second-quarter run staked OHS to a 23-12 halftime lead, and the Lady Warriors carried a 40-20 lead into the final eight minutes.

Jessica Villarreal lit up the board for 15 points to lead Orestimba. Ciera Thibodeau put up 11, and Robinson was in double figures with 10 points. Marroquin finished with five, Elizabeth Lilly netted four and Sarah Millan, Rubi Parra and Jazlyn Tucker each added two points.
