Volleyball season is right around the corner and the Lady Warriors are looking to get started with their season up and running fast.
Head varsity coach Carlee Felber has been working hard with her team and also the frosh-soph all summer long, going through various conditioning and skill set drills to prepare the teams.
“With this season coming up I really wanted to emphasize our passing a lot,” said Felber. “Because if we aren’t able to pass then none of the exciting stuff happens.”
This season Felber, an Orestimba alum who is entering her fifth year as head coach, has had her team working hard and getting into top shape as they enter the new season.
“This summer we have been working on defense and moving our feet to the ball,” Felber told Mattos Newspapers.
The volleyball program has a new coaching addition, as Trisha Gray joins the staff.
The 2019 Lady Warriors return six players from last year’s squad, Felber said, and are welcoming a number of talented newcomers as well.
Felber did not rule out bringing up frosh-soph players to the varsity level.
“This freshmen class is really athletic,” commented Felber. “ Even if I decide not to bring any up to the varsity level I’m very excited for the JV team because they are just a very talented group that I can’t wait to coach.”
The summer drills were voluntary, though well-attended. Practice for the upcoming season officially opened last Monday. The early sessions have largely been devoted to player evaluations, Felber said. Due to the high number of players trying out for the teams, she added, roster cuts will be necessary.
Felber’s goal for the season is not only to make the playoffs but advance in the post-season, she told Mattos Newspapers.
With an eye toward improvement through playing a high level of competition, Orestimba deliberately put together a rugged pre-league schedule.
“This season I decided to put a lot of harder teams in the beginning of the pre-season to prepare us for the (league play) and making us work for that goal,” Felber said.
Orestimba competes in the Merced Spike-Off scrimmages Tuesday, Aug. 20. The Lady Warriors will host a varsity tournament Saturday, Aug. 24. League play begins Sept. 10, when Orestimba hosts Delhi.
