Baseball practice is under way at Orestimba High. Above, Matthew Martins slides safely into third during a recent session.

The new baseball season is right around the corner and Orestimba players and fans are ready for it to begin.

New head varsity baseball coach Paul Baker explains that his Warrior team this year is very young but bring a competitive mindset to the field.

“This year we have about three to four returners and the rest are all young guys moving up from the JV level,” Baker told Mattos Newspapers.

Baker mentioned that he will implement a completely new system to the program this year and said he is confident his players will adjust to it well.

With the basketball season extended by Orestimba’s playoff berth, the Warriors have not had a full squad at practice until last week - the third week of practice.

Now they are better able to execute now game situations and different looks with all players on hand.

For this season and in practices Baker plans to stress the fundamentals of baseball with his team in the fielding aspects, hitting and base running.

“It’s great to have everyone out here now,” said Baker. “ This team is very hard working, and ready to learn every day which makes everything move smoothly for us as that first game approaches.”

Baker commented that the Warriors this season have a challenging pre-league schedule which will test the team before Southern League action rolls around.

As a coach, Baker said, his goals are for the Warriors to compete in every game and earn a playoff berth.

Orestimba will be looking to build on its 7-7 Southern League showing from a year ago.
