A strong second-half lifted Orestimba past perennial Southern League power Mariposa Friday in varsity boys basketball play.
The West Siders trailed 31-24 at the half after a slow start, but took over from there to earn a 59-47 road win.
Orestimba turned to full court defensive pressure, creating numerous turnovers and fast-break opportunities as the Warriors erased the deficit to take a 43-41 lead into the final eight minutes.
Atzin Marin and Joel Solano led the Warriors. Marin finished with 18 points on the night, and also had numerous assists. Solano was in double figures with a dozen points.
Edwin Alvarez chipped in with nine points, Justin Hong scored eight, and Auston Martens, Trevor Heiberger and Xavier Avila added four points each.
Orestimba evened its Southern League record at 1-1 with the road victory.
Denair 45, OHS 44
Orestimba came up one point short against a strong Denair team in its Southern League opener Thursday.
The Warriors battled back after trailing 22-15 at the half, taking the lead twice in the fourth quarter before the Coyotes hit the eventual game-winner with nine seconds left.
Orestimba had a shot at the game-winner with time expiring, only to see it bounce in and out to seal the outcome.
Marin led all scorers with 17 points, and Alvarez was in double figures with 10. Martens finished with seven points, Hong was in the book with six and Heiberger and Solano added two points each.
Orestimba has three home games this week, starting with a non-league matchup Tuesday night against Escalon. The Warriors hosted Le Grand Wednesday and entertain Waterford Friday. Next Wednesday, the Warriors make the short trip to Gustine to face the rival Reds.
Orestimba came up short in both junior varsity games last week.
The JV Warriors dropped a 59-40 decision to Denair Thursday, and fell to Mariposa by a 65-43 final score to close out the week.
