The Orestimba Track and Field team captured the top spot in the Southern Athletic League for both the boys and girls team after posting stellar results at the Saturday meet in Atwater.

“The team’s success was having kids scoring in multiple events,” said Coach Trisha Gray. “Our team has lots of diverse talent for every event.”

On top of claiming the league title, Orestimba’s Devon Bell and Taylor gray were named the league’s MVPs and several team members qualified for sectionals, Gray said.

The team has been putting up great numbers all season long, so Gray expected more of the same at Saturday’s meet and she was not disappointed.

“Going into the finals I was confident we would win for both boys and girls,” gray said. “we were the favorite coming in. There weren’t any big surprises. Everyone performed how I thought they would. Patricio Kearney winning all three individual events was awesome. Dylan McCauley winning long jump was a great performance.”

Out of 17 events, the boys team tallied 10 first place positions, 8 for second and 7 for third. For the girls, they had 10 first place positions, 12 for second and 8 for third.

“I’m very proud of this team,” said Gray. “We have veterans that have been on the team for all four years that have been the key. We also have a lot of young athletes who have broken school records and we’re excited for the next few years to keep improving.”

Sectionals started on Tuesday and will conclude Thursday at Weston Ranch High School.

“My hopes for sectionals is that they all perform to the best of their ability,” Gray said. “The goal is to make it to finals and move on to masters while breaking personal records in the process.”
