A clerk at the Chevron station in Newman fought off a would-be robber and the suspect has been arrested by the Newman Police Department.

The incident occurred at 12:11 a.m. on March 28 at the Chevron station at 1459 N Street in Newman.

The suspect entered the store and issued a demand that the clerk open the register and hand over the cash inside. The suspect threatened the clerk and gestured in a manner that implied he was armed with a weapon, according to the Newman Police Department.

The clerk fought the suspect and the suspect ran from the area.

Through the review of surveillance footage, the Newman Police Department was able to identify the suspect as Jacob Forbes, 20, of Newman. Forbes was known to officers from prior contacts.

On March 31, Forbes went to the Newman Police Department and turned himself in. He also provided a confession, according to the police department.

Forbes was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Facility on charges of attempted robbery and criminal threats.
