NEWMAN — The City of Newman has launched a street maintenance project that will apply slurry seal treatments to selected roads through the end of September, city officials announced.
American Pavement Systems, Inc. and its subcontractors began work on Aug. 11 as part of the city’s Slurry Seal Project, which aims to extend the life of local streets using one of the most cost-effective resurfacing methods available.
Slurry seal is a preventative maintenance treatment composed of emulsified asphalt, water, fine aggregate, and additives. The mixture is spread evenly over prepared pavement to form a new wear layer, sealing minor cracks and improving skid resistance and overall surface durability. According to the California Department of Transportation, slurry seals typically last three to five years and help reduce water infiltration and surface aging.
Construction hours are scheduled from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Streets receiving treatment will be closed to through traffic on designated days, and “No Parking” signs will be posted at least 48 hours in advance. Vehicles parked in posted areas during slurry seal placement will be towed, officials said.
For streets not fully closed, flaggers and crew members will be present to direct traffic and ensure safety. The project is expected to be completed by Sept. 30.
Residents are encouraged to check city notices and maps for specific street closures and dates.
