Getting older doesn’t mean there is less fun to be had. The Red Hatters of Orestimba are proving that on a regular basis.
The Red Hatters have an important motto reiterated by the Vice-Versa (Vice President) Pat Rocha.
“When you reach the age of 50, you have earned the right to wear a red hat and purple clothes, and do whatever the hell you want,” said Rocha.
And they sure do swear by that. The Red Hatters of Orestimba was founded by long-time serving Queen (President), Glennis Kidder, around 20-years ago, under the national Red Hat Society, an organization for women.
Three years ago, Loretta Rose was nominated by society as Queen. When attending events, or dressed-up, members over 50-years of age will wear red and purple. While those 40-50 years of age will wear pink and lavender. It’s a society that embraces the attitude of having fun.
“It’s for women over 50 just to go out and have a good time. Sometimes we go on trips, day trips, weekends, movies. We do a lot of road trips. It’s our time to enjoy,” said Rose.
They have an overarching initiative. Go out in the world and have a great time. The society meets every Tuesday of the month besides June, July and August. Considered a disorganization, it doesn’t have to follow local club rules, and meetings are different than a normal club. Meetings be organized at arranged locations to plan trips, hangouts or even social events. Events that the Red Hatters of Orestimba have completed include trips to Las Vegas, marched at the Dublin St. Patrick’s event, Newman downtown parades, and many others.
“It’s just one big sisterhood. And we try to support each other,” said Rose.
The club is small but is looking to expand. There’s no cost to sign-up, just show-up. The Red Hatters of Orestimba have been slowly declining in size over the years. Currently, the club is only about 18 members and it used be around 60. They span from different cities, not just Newman. Red Hatters of Orestimba encourage members to join the club and attend their events.
