GUSTINE — Portuguese heritage and Catholic tradition took center stage in Gustine this weekend as the GPS Pentecost Society hosted the 2026 Pentecost Presentation of the Queens, a long‑standing cultural celebration that continues to unite families across generations.
The highlight of the evening was the introduction of the incoming Pentecost Queen, Kylee Lopes, who spoke about the deep personal meaning behind her role. Lopes said her path to the crown was shaped by the influence of her grandmother, Ava Lopes, whose guidance instilled both cultural pride and faith.
“Something that inspired me is my Ava Lopes,” she said. “She raised me and taught me about my heritage, and I’ve been doing this ever since. It has also been a way to strengthen my faith.”
Lopes encouraged younger girls to embrace the opportunity to serve as queen, calling it an experience that builds confidence, cultural understanding and compassion. “Do it,” she said. “It’s something that you can’t lose anything from. It will help you build faith and culture.”
Joining her on the court is Little Queen Charlotte Siqueiros, who said the camaraderie among the girls is one of the most meaningful parts of the tradition. “We are always together. We like it that way,” she said, adding that her favorite moment of the night was reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.
GPS Pentecost Society President Richard Martin said the event reflects the community’s commitment to preserving traditions that have endured for centuries. He emphasized that continued participation and support are essential to keeping the celebration alive.
“The best way to support would be coming out to our functions, coming to the festivities, and donating,” Martin said. “Without donations, none of this would be possible.”
Martin said he hopes the presentation inspires residents to remain engaged in their cultural heritage. “The message I hope the community takes away is that the Portuguese heritage and traditions are continued,” he said. “The only way we can continue is to have people keep coming out and celebrating.”
As the 2026 Pentecost season begins, Gustine once again demonstrated the strength of its cultural roots — and the pride that comes with passing those traditions to the next generation.
