Newman 4-H member Olivia Casey recently completed the California 4-H Food Action Academy. The program was designed to educate members on food insecurity and how to help recognize the need for assistance in their communities.
Casey was one of five members in California to participate in the seven week program. Participating members were taught about food banks and their importance to each individual community; members learned how to map food banks, stores and people who were involved in their community that could assist them. Casey stated that her interest in the program came from her 4-H Service-Learning project; her mapping project was based on the research for that project and her inspiration was Mr. Victor Perry who assisted her with her research and who is very involved in the Newman-Gustine communities and the AGAPE Food Pantry.
Casey created a workshop to assist members in the importance of identifying food insecurity in their communities and how to help develop a solution. Casey will be presenting this information in the upcoming Food Action Academy Two as well as facilitating a full session on Food Insecurity at the California 4-H State Leadership Conference in July.
