NEWMAN — The Newman community is mourning the loss of Melvin Joseph Souza, a longtime firefighter and former chief whose decades of service left an indelible mark on the city he called home.
Souza, who passed away peacefully on Nov. 11 at the age of 86, served with the Newman Fire Department for 42 years, including 26 years as Fire Chief. Known for his courage, commitment, and deep compassion, Souza was a pillar of public safety and community spirit.
“It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of former Fire Chief Melvin Souza,” the Newman Firefighters Association shared in a statement. “Chief Souza dedicated decades of his life to protecting the place we call home. Beyond his role as Chief, he was a beloved member of the community, known for his resilience and spirit. His unwavering dedication to the safety and well-being of our community has left a lasting legacy.”
Souza’s leadership extended beyond emergency response. He was instrumental in mentoring younger firefighters, fostering a culture of integrity and service, and strengthening the department’s connection to the community. His tenure was marked by steady guidance, a sharp wit, and a steadfast belief in neighborly care.
In addition to his fire service, Souza was a familiar face in Newman through his longtime ownership of Mel’s Liquor and Sporting Goods, where he served generations of local families. But it was his role in the fire department that defined his public legacy—one built on trust, bravery, and a deep love for his hometown.
Souza is remembered not only for his professional contributions but for the warmth and humor he brought to every interaction. His presence, whether at the firehouse or in the community, was one of strength and kindness.
The Newman Firefighters Association extended heartfelt condolences to Souza’s family and friends, stating, “We are forever grateful for his service.”
Souza’s legacy lives on in the department he helped shape and the community he protected for nearly a quarter century.
