Volleyball Sign-Ups Open for Newman Recreation Leagues and Fall Festival Tournament
The Newman Recreation Department is gearing up for its 39th year of co-ed volleyball leagues, with registration beginning August 21. Leagues will run Tuesday and Thursday nights starting September 9 and 11, lasting eight weeks. Players must be 18 and out of high school. Entry is $5 per player per league, with an additional $5 fee for those living outside NCLUSD boundaries. Each league is capped at 12 teams.
In addition, the 35th annual Newman Fall Festival Volleyball Tournament will take place August 30, starting at 9 a.m. Registration opens at 8 a.m. Teams of two to four players will compete in upper and lower divisions using a pool play format followed by single elimination. Entry is $10 per person, and the first 250 participants will receive a commemorative T-shirt.

Barbecue for Veterans
On Aug. 19, the American Legion Post 240 and the VFW #7635 and the Auxiliaries will be hosting their monthly barbecue. All local veterans and their families are welcome to join them at 6 p.m. at the Veteran’s Memorial Hall at 145 Fifth Street Gustine. Bring your own meat to barbecue and a place setting and utensils. Newman Hosts Free Summer Movie Night Series at Sherman Park
The City of Newman will bring back its annual Summer Movie Night Series at Sherman Park, offering free outdoor screenings for residents to enjoy.
The 2025 lineup includes:
- August 16: Despicable Me 4
Sherman Park, located at 330 Cinnamon Teal Way, will open its snack bar at 7 p.m., with movies starting at 8 p.m.
Residents are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs for a comfortable viewing experience under the stars.
