NEWMAN — A Modesto man was arrested late March 23 after leading officers on a vehicle pursuit that ended with the help of spike strips and a police K‑9, according to the Newman Police Department.

The incident began at about 9:46 p.m., when Officer Freeman attempted to stop a vehicle for a California Vehicle Code violation near Sherman Parkway and Balsam Drive. Police said the driver, identified as 59‑year‑old James Brackett of Modesto, failed to yield and fled.

Newman officers pursued the vehicle with assistance from the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies deployed spike strips, disabling the vehicle in the area of West Main Street and Blaker Road. Brackett surrendered to K‑9 Gizmo and was taken into custody without further incident, police said.

Brackett was arrested on suspicion of felony evading and on unrelated warrants.

Newman police thanked the Sheriff’s Office and the Ceres Police Department for their assistance.
