NEWMAN — The Newman City Council is expected to authorize an agreement Tuesday that would allow the city to access federal grant funding for firefighting gear and equipment.
As part of its consent calendar, the council will consider adopting a resolution authorizing the city manager or fire chief to execute an agreement with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection for Volunteer Fire Capacity (VFC) program funding.
The VFC program, funded federally and administered by the state, provides financial assistance to rural fire departments for minor firefighting, training, communications, and safety equipment. The program requires a 50/50 match, meaning the City of Newman Fire Department must contribute an equal amount to any awarded funds.
Newman Fire Department officials said the funding would be used to replace expired wildland and structural firefighting gear, including helmets, boots, masks, pagers, radios, and fire shelters. The department previously received VFC funding, which helped it meet national compliance standards and qualify for additional grants.
The total project cost is capped at $29,500, with the city eligible for reimbursement of up to half that amount. Funding has already been requested in the city’s 2025–2026 fiscal year budget.
City staff said the agreement would help the department maintain life-saving equipment and keep pace with evolving safety standards, while reducing the financial burden on the city.
Tuesday’s meeting will be held at City Hall.
