Sarah (Serafina) Aurora Ramos, 95, passed away on Thursday, June 26, 2025 at home in Swansea, IL from natural causes. She was born on January 18, 1930 in Norte Pequeno, San Jorge, Azores.
Her parents were, Manuel Vitorino dos Santos and Cezaltina de Lemos dos Santos. Sarah was one of 10 children. She is survived by her children, son, William D. (Yolanda) Ramos; daughter, Cheryl (Phil) Collins; grandchildren, Alicia (Carrie) Ramos Ransom, Laura Ramos, Sarah (Peter) Foschi, Katherine Collins and her brother, Silverio (Celina) Santos. She also had numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Manuel S. Ramos, Jr.; sisters, Cezaltina Silveira, Maria Silva, Clara Silveira, Filomena Lurdes Ramos and Lidail Nunes; brothers, Serafin Vitorino Silveira, Manuel Vitorino Silveira, Jose Vitorino Silveira and Aires Vitorino Santos.
Sarah immigrated from the Azores to California in 1949, where she met her husband, a dairy farmer from Crows Landing, CA. She lived there for 56 years, and then moved to Swansea, IL. She was a hardworking farm wife who enjoyed cooking, cleaning, sewing, crocheting, knitting and especially crafting in her free time. Sarah also worked hard to assist several of her siblings and her mother to immigrate to the United States during the 1960’s in order to have a better life.
Memorials may be made to Catholic Charities St. Frances Cabrini Center-Immigration Legal Assistance, information available online. A Visitation was held Wednesday, July 9th at 4:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 6:00 p.m. at Hillview Funeral Chapel, Newman, CA. A Funeral Mass was held at St. Joachim’s Catholic Church in Newman, CA on July 10th at 10:00 a.m. The Burial followed at Hills Ferry Cemetery, Newman, CA.
