GUSTINE— A blistering opening surge from Mariposa proved too much for the Gustine Lady Reds to counter Thursday night, as the Grizzlies rolled to a 47–16 win despite a spirited second‑half push from the home team.

Gustine (3-9) found itself on its heels early as Mariposa (15-5) controlled the pace from the opening tip. Martha Torres provided the Reds’ only points of the first quarter, muscling in a basket to cut briefly into the deficit, but the Grizzlies’ transition game kept rolling. Mariposa closed the period with an 18–2 lead and stretched it to 36–4 by halftime, with Izabella Rueda adding Gustine’s lone second‑quarter bucket.

The Reds regrouped after the break and delivered their strongest stretch of the night in the third. Kylie Palomino and Gwendolyn Barcelos each scored 2 points, while Isabella Haro sparked the crowd with a three‑pointer and a layup for a 5‑point quarter. By the end of the period, Gustine trailed 46–13 but had finally found some rhythm against the Grizzlies’ defense.

Gustine closed the game with another determined effort, holding Mariposa to just one point in the fourth. Torres and Rueda each added 2 more points as the Reds continued to battle to the final whistle.

Haro led Gustine with 5 points, including the team’s lone three‑pointer. Torres and Rueda finished with 4 points apiece, while Palomino and Barcelos each added 2.

The Lady Reds return home Thursday, Feb. 5, to host Modesto Christian, followed by Senior Night on Tuesday, Feb. 10, against Le Grand. Both games are scheduled for 6 p.m.
