The Gustine Reds showed plenty of fight Monday afternoon, putting up 10 runs in a high‑scoring matchup before falling 20–10 to Denair in five innings. Despite the loss, a pair of big middle‑inning rallies underscored the Reds’ ability to generate offense against tough league competition.
Gustine opened the game aggressively. Jacqueline Chavez drew a leadoff walk in the first inning, followed by base hits from Jaclynn Lopez, Leilah Fara and Malia Huhane. Denair managed to escape the jam, but the Reds set an early tone.
Huhane started strong in the circle, striking out two after allowing a leadoff bunt. Chavez ended the inning with a highlight play, firing to third to catch a runner stealing and keeping the game scoreless.
Denair broke through in the second, capitalizing on a string of hits and passed balls to build an 8–0 lead. But the Reds refused to fold.
Gustine answered in the third when Chavez, Lopez and Fara sparked a string of hits. Fara’s RBI double put the Reds on the board, and Huhane followed with an RBI groundout. Lyneah Esparza doubled and Kylie Palomino added an RBI to cut the deficit to 8–4.
The Reds kept swinging in the fourth. Daryana Elizalde opened the inning with a hit, and Fara delivered a two‑run double. Huhane added a two‑RBI single, while Palomino and Michelle Nunes chipped in with base hits to pull Gustine within 16–9.
Lopez singled in the fifth and scored on another RBI from Fara, who led the Reds offensively. The run‑rule ended the game in the bottom half.
Head coach Yolanda Gallichio said she was proud of her team’s effort, especially with several players missing due to ag commitments. “The girls did not strike out once, and girls that never stole got their first steals,” Gallichio said. “Overall, they did good.”
The Reds will look to build on Monday’s offensive momentum as they continue league play.
The Reds will take on Le Grand at 4 p.m. on Wednesday at home.
