Traveling up north, Orestimba High boys’ basketball extends its losing streak to nine games following a 79-48 loss to Sonora High on Friday.

The Warriors fell to 6-17 overall and remained winless in Trans-Valley League play at 0-7, while the Wildcats improved to 11-12 overall and 7-1 against TVL opponents to remain in second place in the league standings.

Sophomores Emiliano Medina and Brett Gray led Orestimba in scoring with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Medina finished the evening with five 3-pointers.

Orestimba head coach Donald Dudley praised both players’ performance and making the jump from junior varsity to varsity.

“We were led by points [from] two sophomores, Emiliano Medina and Brett Gray, and they played well,” Dudley said. “[Medina] was comfortable out there on the offensive end, which is reassuring [and] very confident.”

Dudley said the team played well in the first three quarters, but were outboxed when it came to rebounding, specifically offensive rebounds. He added that Sonora had 24 offensive rebounds, which reflected in the final score. In a Jan.9 matchup, the Wildcats outrebounded the Warriors 34-16, which led to Sonora scoring second chance points.

“If we just take away [some offensive boards] and get a couple of those box outs, I think the score is a lot closer,” Dudley said. “[Sonora] is a tall team, they’re athletic.”

As Dudley nearly concludes his first season at the helm of the program, he looks forward to competing in the TVL with this being the second year that the school has been in the league.

“As we get going, I do see us getting more and more competitive in the TVL at all levels,” he said.

Orestimba will host Ripon High (6-17) (1-6 TVL) on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. tipoff. Both teams previously played one another on Jan. 14 when Ripon won 57-46.

The Indians come to Newman with a five-game losing streak, but are undefeated in all-time matchups against the Warriors with a 13-0 record.
