Orestimba High boys’ basketball teams remain winless in Trans-Valley League after losing 83-42 to Escalon High at home on Friday.
Orestimba fell to 6-16 overall and 0-7 in the TVL, while Escalon improved to 13-9 overall and 4-2 against TVL opponents.
Four players scored in double-digits, with Jake Ferreira leading with a double-double 18 points and 10 rebounds. Following him was Ben Ferreira, who scored 16 points and went 7 for 12 from the field. Conner Jones recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 points.
Two players scored in double figures for the Warriors as Emiliano Medina and Traveyon Wright Jr. finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Medina recently made the jump from junior varsity and varsity following his performance in last month’s Winter Classic tournament, Orestimba head coach Donald Dudley said.
He added that players from all levels have been sick all week, implying that a “sick bug going around, and it hit us hard. With multiple players out, it gave Medina an opportunity to show what he could contribute.
“He’s a great shooter, doing his best for us,” Dudley said about Medina. “[He] made a sacrifice to come up for varsity.”
Orestimba struggled to produce any second points as with the contrast of player’s heights, they were outrebounded 29-19. Additionally, the Warriors didn’t take care of handling the ball with 19 turnovers.
Escalon opened the game on a 14-5 run with a combined 10 points from Logan Huebner and Isaac Petalio. After finishing the first quarter with a 12-point lead, the Cougars continued their momentum in the second quarter, outscoring Orestimba 21-10 in the second for a 45-22 lead at halftime.
The Cougars continued their success in the second half, holding Orestimba to 20 points, including a nine-point fourth quarter.
With six games left in the regular season, Orestimba will travel to Sonora High (9-13) (5-1 TVL) on Friday for a 7 p.m. tipoff. For Dudley, he’s excited to travel up north for a matchup against one of the TVL’s best, praising the school’s student section and band.
“It’s gonna be a good game. I’m hoping we’re gonna play hard,” he said. “We get to play the better dog, and let’s go steal something from someone and have fun.”
