Going into this season, the Orestimba High baseball team hasn't won a series, let alone a game against a league opponent in two years. That, however, changed last week.
The Warriors opened its Trans-Valley League slate with a series sweep against Sonora High. The team also recorded its TVL win since becoming a league member last season. Orestimba extended its winning streak to three games and improved to 8-4 overall. The program is now 2-2 in all-time matchups against the Wildcats.
Warriors head coach Louie Dominguez said getting the series win was a “great feeling” for not only him, but also for the players who were on last season’s team that went winless in league play.
“It was great for them (the players) to get their first one and then finish it up on Friday and to win a series,” Dominguez said. “It’s testament to our kids' work ethic and buying into what we’re trying to teach as coaches.”
Freshman third baseman Damian Mendoza made his presence known on Friday by going 2 for 4 with five RBIs, a run and a double.
Sophomore shortstop Axel Diaz also had an impressive showing through the two games by going 6-8 for a combined two RBIs and six runs. Diaz translated his performance on home plate on the mound with a combined seven strikeouts in the series while not allowing a single run.
The Warriors completed the series sweep with a 17-3 win on the road.
With a 3-1 lead going into the top of the fifth inning during the series finale, Orestimba scored four runs to extend their lead to six. The Wildcats responded back with two runs in the bottom of the inning. That was the final runs scored by Sonora as the Warriors scored 10 runs through the final two innings for the series win.
48 hours prior to Friday’s game, Orestimba hosted the series opener. The Warriors dominated its matchup from start to finish, resulting in a 11-4 win.
With Orestimba leading 3-0 through two innings, the Wildcats cut the lead to one with two runs in top of the third. Orestimba responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to bring the lead back to three. Eventually, they outscored Sonora 6-2 in through the final three innings to win by seven.
As the Warriors continue its TVL slate, Dominguez said he doesn’t want the team to think too far ahead of its schedule.
“We’re out there and we want to play baseball,” he said. “We’re really excited about what’s happening right now.”
Orestimba will travel to Hughson High to begin its second series matchup on Tuesday, March 24. The first pitch will be at 4 p.m.
