After participating in two dual-meets to begin the season, Orestimba High swim team competed in its largest meet on Saturday in the Merced County Championships at Merced College.

20 teams took part in Saturday’s event, from Merced High School to Turlock High School. The Warriors had fewer swimmers than usual because some players had to work on extra curricular activities, according to head coach John Labno. This led to the team participating in eight events.

Despite the circumstance, Labno said the Saturday’s meet was an opportunity for the players to know what it’s like to compete against some of the top teams in the area.

“They were nervous because [of] the fact that there was going to be so many different teams there,” Labno said. “I think they really liked the ability to compete against more teams, and to be able to kind of compare themselves to that.”

In the women’s 200-meter freestyle relay, Orestimba swam a time of 2 minutes and 38.61 seconds to finish 33th.

Junior Diego Mendoza clocked 1:32.68 to finish 44th in the men’s 100-meter breaststroke event. Mendoza finished 61st in the men’s 50-meter freestyle after he clocked in a time of 32.18 seconds, a new personal record.

Senior Beatrice Rebosio and freshman Rylynn Graham set new personal record times of 1:51.19 and 1:56.26 to end up in 51st and 53rd, respectively, in the women’s 100-meter breaststroke.

In the women’s 200-meter freestyle event, Rebosio came in 54th place after she swam at a time of 3:27.60.

Senior Anaya Kowalskie recorded new personal record times of 37.80 seconds and 1:30.76 in the women’s 50-meter and 100-meter freestyle events.

Orestimba will travel to Sonora High for its next meet on Wednesday. The first event will begin at 4 p.m.
