Orestimba softball edged by Falcons

NEWMAN – In a non-league home game on Thursday, the Orestimba High softball team hosted Atwater High’s squad.

Although the Warriors banged out three hits, the visiting Falcons flew to a more hits that led to a 5-4 win.

Orestimba (9-6 overall, 1-3 in the Trans-Valley League) held a 4-3 lead entering the top of the seventh inning. That is when Atwater scored twice to post the win.

Cayla Finley, along with Warrior teammates Karina Gonzalez and Salece Machado, each had a hit in this game. Finley and Hailey Starr each had an RBI.

Atwater’s Kylie Medina cranked out two triples. The Falcons had 10 hits in the game.

Escalon 6, Orestimba 3

In a TVL game at the Cougars’ field on March 24, Escalon led 2-1 until the bottom of the fourth inning, when it scored four runs.

Orestimba added two more runs in the top of the sixth frame. But the Warriors were held scoreless in their final at-bat.

The Warriors produced more hits than the Cougars by a 7-6 margin.

Ellery Gustafson went 2-for-4 for the Warriors. Finley, the Warriors’ leadoff hitter, had a hit along with teammates in Leah Martinez, Natalie Corella, Machado and Starr.

Escalon’s Lizzy Allan had three hits in the contest, while teammate Madison Babasa went 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI. Addy Lopez produced four RBIs.

Both teams were guilty of committing three errors each.

Orestimba 5, Central Valley 2

The Warriors started the week with a non-league home game against Central Valley of Ceres on March 23.

Orestimba busted open a 1-1 game in the bottom of the third inning with three runs for a 4-1 score. The Warriors added their final run in the fourth.

The visiting Hawks scored a run in the first and seventh innings.

The Warriors finished the game with 11 hits. Central Valley had seven.

Corella had the big day for the Warriors, going 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Starr, along with Gustafson, Victoria Silva and Finley had two hits each. One of Starr’s hits was a home run, plus two RBIs. Finley had a double and triple.

Gustafson, in the circle, went the distance. She struck out two Hawk batters, allowed five hits and walked none.

Upcoming games

Orestimba have two league home games this week.

On Tuesday, the Warriors continued TVL action as they welcomed Sonora. On Thursday, Orestimba entertains Hilmar. The latter game starts at 4 p.m.

The Warriors take a break from league action next week and compete in the Tracy Classic, which is scheduled to run from Friday, April 10 to Saturday, April 11.
