TRACY, Calif. – Taking a short break from Trans-Valley League action last week, the Orestimba High softball team made the short to the west side of San Joaquin County to compete in the Nor Cal Leadoff Classic.
The Warriors left the classic with an even 2-2 record.
Here is the breakdown of those games.
Enochs 9, Orestimba 1
Playing the final game of the classic on Friday, the two teams combined for 23 hits. But Enochs had 15 of those hits while the Warriors had eight.
Enochs had a 6-0 lead until the bottom of the fourth inning when Orestimba plated a run. Enochs scored two more runs in the top of the fifth and its final run in the sixth.
Orestimba 10, Berkeley 6
Another game also played on Friday, the Warriors erased the Yellowjackets’ 6-1 lead by scoring five times in the bottom of the third inning. Orestimba added three more runs in the fourth and the final one in the fifth.
Sophia Machado was the hitting machine for the Warriors in this contest, going 3-for-3 with a double and triple. Belany Martens also had a double in the contest.
Salece Machado went 2-for-4 at the plate for Orestimba. Teammates Sam Mendoza, Rae Oliveros, Mariah Avila, Hailey Starr and Ellery Gustafson had a hit each.
In the circle, Mendoza went 3 1/3 innings, striking out two and giving up four hits. Starr tossed 1 2/3 innings and allowed seven hits.
Vintage 9, Orestimba 0
On Thursday, Vintage, out of Napa, had 12 hits. After a scoreless first inning, Vintage scored at least one run in each inning through the seventh.
Orestimba had four hits in the classic contest. Salece Machado had two hits, while Natalie Corella and Avila had a hit each.
Orestimba 10, Stagg 0
Playing the first game of the classic also on Thursday, the Warriors used 11 hits and two Delta Knights errors to their advantage.
Gustafson went 3-for-4 for the Warriors, including a double. Corella went 3-for-3 and 2 RBIs for the Warriors. Starr had two hits that included a double and Avila also two hits and 4 RBIs.
Starr went the distance in the circle for Orestimba, as she struck out six and gave up no hits. She walked one.
Upcoming games
Orestimba (4-3 in the TVL, 10-11) is still in the hunt for one of the league’s three playoff spots.
The Warriors return to TVL play on Thursday when it hosts Sonora at 4 p.m.
Then the two teams meet again on Friday, this time at Sonora at 5:30 p.m.
Orestimba will close out TVL play on Tuesday, May 6 when it hosts Hilmar (3-4 in the TVL, 9-9). The Warriors beat Hilmar 13-0 on the Yellowjackets’ diamond in their first meeting on April 3.
