Downtown Gustine is welcoming a new neighbor this summer with the opening of Scrawl, Scribble & Smirch Bookshop, a cozy independent bookstore set to open its doors at 536 5th Street, just across from Coast-to-Coast Hardware.
The store is the dream project of Gustine resident and author Marie Hall, who hopes to create a small, welcoming space for book lovers and gift shoppers alike.
Unlike traditional chain bookstores, this independently operated shop will carry a curated mix of new, bargain, and used books, along with a selection of gifts, stationery, records, stickers, and locally made crafts. From book-themed mugs to handmade jewelry, Hall envisions the shop as a quaint stop for those seeking thoughtful presents or a bit of inspiration.
While not aiming to be a large-scale learning center, the bookshop will feature occasional writing workshops, story time for children, and community book events—a light but creative offering that complements Gustine’s already strong educational landscape.
“I just want to create a space where people feel welcome and inspired,” Hall shared. “It’s a place to browse, connect, and maybe fall in love with a good story.”
Hall, a traditionally published author, brings her background in writing and editing to the project, but emphasizes that Scrawl, Scribble & Smirch is more of a passion project than a commercial powerhouse. She also plans to carry a wide variety of bilingual books such as carrying collections of Spanish and Portuguese language titles to reflect the community’s diversity, with room to grow based on interest.
The bookstore’s name, inspired by playful terms for writing, reflects its creative spirit. The shop’s mascot—Smirch the book-loving dragon—adds a fun and memorable touch for younger visitors.
While Hall hopes the shop will become a gathering space for readers, artists, and families, she’s careful to keep expectations grounded. “We’re starting small, and I’m learning as I go,” she said. “This has been a dream of mine for 34 years”
Scrawl, Scribble & Smirch is currently aiming for a late July opening. Hall plans to keep things flexible in the beginning, with limited hours and gradual programming, depending on community response.
