GUSTINE — What began as a humble stack of books on an old ice cream cart has grown into one of the Westside’s most beloved literacy initiatives—and this year, the Gustine Traveling Library is pulling out all the stops for its annual Open House celebration.
On Tuesday, Oct. 15, from 5 to 8 p.m., the library will open its doors at 417 5th Street for an evening of gratitude, giveaways, and community connection. This year’s event will honor two standout partners whose support helped the library weather one of its toughest chapters: last year’s unexpected flood.
A Plus Plumbing will be recognized for their swift and selfless response. When water threatened the library’s headquarters, they were the first on scene—stopping the leak, relocating shelves and supplies, and checking in throughout the recovery process. Their dedication “truly saved our headquarters,” said Zachery Ramos, the organization’s founder.
Also being honored is the Patterson Chamber of Commerce, whose outreach and coordination inspired a wave of support from other local businesses. “They showed us what true community looks like,” said Ramos, noting how the Chamber balanced its own busy schedule while helping the library rebuild.
The Open House will feature a free raffle with signed books from celebrities including John Cena (Elbow Grease: Motozilla), Drew Barrymore (Rebel Homemaker), and Jimmy Fallon (5 More Sleeps ‘til Christmas). Attendees can also enjoy themed freebies like Pokémon cards, LEGOs, and more—perfect for families and young readers.
The Gustine Traveling Library, supported by United Way of Merced County, has become a mobile literacy lifeline for youth and families across the region. Its mission is simple but powerful: bring books and resources to those who need them most, especially in rural and underserved areas. From its early days as a two-wheeled cart to its current role as a community hub, the library continues to evolve while staying true to its grassroots spirit.
Admission is free, and all ages are welcome.
