Keeping Westside youth active and connected
michael campos

Many families find themselves searching for meaningful ways to keep children active, social, and engaged beyond screens. For Newman parent and community member Michael Campos, that mission has become a labor of love—one that is bringing Westside families together through simple, joyful, and inclusive community activities.

Through LoveNewman, in collaboration with Newman First Baptist Church and Love Our Neighbors, Campos has helped organize a wide range of free youth and family activities throughout October, November, and December. These events are intentionally designed to get kids outside, encourage face-to-face interaction, and strengthen family and community bonds during the busy holiday months.

Activities have included corn maze field trips, movie nights, community board game nights, park and church play dates, Wednesday night youth groups, bowling outings, Christmas parties, and more. Each event offers families a safe, welcoming space to connect, laugh, and spend quality time together—without the pressure of cost.

Engaging in holiday-season activities plays an important role in children’s social, emotional, and physical development. By participating in group games, outdoor play, and shared experiences, youth build friendships, confidence, communication skills, and healthy habits that extend beyond the holidays. Campos and his partners have focused on creating opportunities that nurture well-rounded growth while reminding families of the value of togetherness.

“Seeing all the kids and parents engage with each other—talking, playing, and laughing together—has been the biggest blessing,” Campos shared. “You can really see how much fun the families and youth are having, and how it’s making a positive impact on their social lives.”

A key principle behind the effort is accessibility. All events are free, ensuring that no family feels excluded due to financial challenges.

“We know how hard things can be financially, especially during the holidays,” Campos said. “We want everyone to be included without worrying about breaking the bank. These are good old-fashioned community events that bring people together from all walks of life.”

Community members looking to support the work can help in several ways. Campos encourages residents to share event posts on the Newman Youth Activities Facebook page, donate items such as board games, outdoor play equipment, books, and prizes, or simply volunteer their time.

“People’s time is the biggest contribution,” he noted.

The work led by Michael Campos and LoveNewman stands as a reminder that sometimes the most meaningful gifts are connection, community, and the chance for kids to just be kids—outside, active, and surrounded by people who care.
