GUSTINE — Since 1997, Patti Guinn has been a steadfast advocate for animal welfare, leading Tail Waggin All Breed Rescue in its mission to care for abandoned, neglected and stray animals.
The rescue began with a single act of kindness when a mother dog and her two puppies appeared near Guinn’s country home. “That mother dog and her two puppies became the start of everything,” Guinn said. “We fixed them, cared for them and found them homes. One of those puppies lived to be 17 years old with my brother.”
Today, Tail Waggin All Breed Rescue takes in up to 300 dogs annually, placing them in homes across the U.S. and Canada. In addition to shelter, the rescue provides spay and neuter services, vaccinations and microchipping.
Recently, the organization hosted a community fundraiser and dog food donation drive, drawing visitors from Turlock, Patterson and Los Banos to support its lifesaving mission. The event raised funds and replenished food supplies for the dogs in its care.
“Events like these remind us that we’re not alone,” Guinn said. “Our community truly steps up for the animals. Whether it’s bringing a bag of food, donating a dollar or volunteering an hour—every bit helps us keep going.”
The rescue has witnessed many emotional reunions, including one that still brings tears to Guinn’s eyes—a small Maltese found injured on a rainy day in Gustine. A microchip scan revealed the dog had been missing for five years. Her original owner had kept a photo of her in his Bible and prayed for her return. The reunion was unforgettable.
Despite the success stories, challenges persist. “Rescues everywhere are overwhelmed,” Guinn said. “We’re constantly trying to do more with less, and that’s why community support is so crucial.”
Tail Waggin All Breed Rescue relies on volunteers to assist at events, walk dogs, manage supplies and spread awareness. Guinn encourages those who love animals to reach out via Facebook or the rescue’s website.
Looking ahead, Guinn remains committed to her mission. “It’s the love and support from our community that keeps us going, and for that, we are incredibly grateful,” she said.
